Understanding Openness Factor
Openness factor refers to the percentage of the fabric’s surface area that is open or has gaps in the weave. This is a critical specification for solar screens as it determines how much direct light can pass through the material and how clearly you can see through it.
For solar screens specifically, the openness factor typically ranges from 1% to 14%, though in New Mexico, most clients opt for between 1% and 5%. Here’s what different openness factors mean:
1-3% Openness
These are considered “tight weave” fabrics that provide maximum heat and UV blockage (up to 97-99% UV protection). They offer good outward visibility while providing higher daytime privacy. They’re ideal for intense sun exposure situations, and are typically used in interiors.
5% Openness
This is the most commonly used openness factor, offering a good balance between visibility and protection. It blocks about 95% of UV rays while maintaining clear outward views. These are typically used on exteriors.
7-10% Openness
These provide excellent outward visibility with moderate heat and glare control. They’re ideal for situations where maintaining the view is a priority while still needing some sun protection.
12-14% Openness
Maximum visibility with minimal light control. These are used primarily when view preservation is the top priority.
The openness factor works in conjunction with the fabric color to determine overall performance. Darker colors on the exterior provide better glare reduction, increase outward visibility (although they absorb more heat), and show a patio cover shadow when driving by. Lighter colors on the interior reflect more heat but provide less visibility.
